- Function
The Ontario Combative Sport Advisory Council provides expert advice to the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport on regulations that the Minister may make under s. 49 of the Combative Sports Act, 2019. This may include advice regarding, but not limited to, governing fees and eligible expenses and modernizing rule sets of combative sports in Ontario. The Advisory Council also advises on health and safety issues while ensuring combative sport rules are aligned with leading jurisdictions, with the goal of making Ontario a more attractive business environment and destination to host combative sport events.
- Membership
The Council shall consist of no more than seven Members. The Lieutenant Governor in Council will appoint the members of the Advisory Council upon recommendation of the Minister. The Lieutenant Governor in Council may designate one of the members of the Advisory Council as the Chair and one or more of the members as the Vice-Chairs. A majority of the members of the Council constitutes a quorum.
- Qualifications
Candidates must:
• Be over the age of 18 years;
• Meet whatever qualifications are set by the Minister, or set out in the applicable Combative Sports Act and/or the regulation;
• Be capable of managing property, under the Substitute Decisions Act, 1992 or under the Mental Health Act;
• Not have been found incapable by any court in Canada or elsewhere;
• Not have the status of bankrupt, and,
• Be an eligible individual under the Income Tax Act (Canada).The council shall be composed of people who collectively:
- have expertise or technical experience in one or more combative sports;
- have expertise or experience in the areas of sport administration, sport policy and sport governance;
- have experience in the combative sports industry;
- have demonstrated interest or experience in one or more combative sports;
- have demonstrated experience in interpreting, applying and promoting compliance with legislation and regulations;
- may be legally qualified medical practitioners with experience providing medical services at combative sport contests or exhibitions;
- represent the public interest; and
- demonstrate any other factors relevant to the functions of the Council.In addition to the factors set out above, regard shall also be had to appointing Members that represent the diversity of the population of Ontario and the interests of participants in both amateur and professional versions of combative sport.
- Term
Up to three years at pleasure and eligible for reappointment.
- Remuneration
Appointees are remunerated according to Schedule A, Level 2 of the Agencies and Appointments Directive. Appointees will also be compensated for preparation time (to a maximum of three hours per meeting).
