Function

The college regulates the profession of Medicine in the public interest by ensuring that individuals have access to services provided by competent health professionals, and that individuals are treated with sensitivity and respect in their dealings with health professionals. Members of the college are governed in accordance with the Medicine Act, 1991, the Health Professions Procedural Code, the Regulated Health Professions Act, 1991 and the regulations and by-laws of the college. The college develops and maintains standards of professional ethics, and promotes and develops standards for continuing competence among the members. Various committees of the College of Physicians and Surgeons function in a quasi-judicial role with respect to the suspension and revocations of certificates of registration to practice in Ontario.

Membership

Sixteen members are elected in accordance with the by-laws by the members of the college. Between thirteen and fifteen members are appointed by the Lieutenant Governor in Council who are not members of the college, members of a college as defined in the Regulated Health Professions Act, 1991 or members of a council as defined in the Regulated Health Professions Act, 1991. Three members are selected, in accordance with a by-law made under section 24.(1), from among members who are members of a faculty of medicine of a university in Ontario. The council elects annually a president and a vice-president from among the members.

Term

There is no limitation in legislation.

Meetings

• Council: Four 2-day meetings per year. Prep: One day per meeting date. Education days up to four ½ days per year. • Public members are required to sit on either the Tribunal (Discipline Committee) or the Inquiries, Complaints, and Reports Committee. o Tribunal/Fitness to Practice Committee: 15-50 hearing days per year, two days of business/education meetings. Prep: varies from 1-15 hours per hearing. o Inquiries, Complaints and Reports Committee: 60+ meetings per year (5-6 panel meetings per month) and 2 days of business/policy meetings. Prep: 4-8 days prep per panel & 1-3 hours of prep per business meeting. • Public members may also be asked to sit on the Registration Committee: o Registration committee: 10 1-day Member Specific Issue (MSI) meetings, two-three Business meetings Business and Policy meetings, 11 Teleconference Meetings. Prep: MSI & Business meetings 20-35 hours per meeting, 3-6 hours for teleconference meetings. • In addition, public members may choose to stand for election/express interest in serving on one of the following committees: o Executive: Eight 1-day meetings. Prep: 3-4 hours per meeting. o Governance: Nine half-day meetings. Prep: 1-3 hours per meeting. o Finance and Audit: Three 1-day meetings. Prep: 2 hours per meeting.

Remuneration

Appointees are remunerated according to Schedule A, Level 1 of the Agencies and Appointments Directive.
