Function

The Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) is a self-funded, not-for-profit corporation responsible for the administration and enforcement of the Technical Standards and Safety Act and its regulations on behalf of the Government of Ontario. TSSA works to enhance the safety of Ontarians in several areas, including: boilers and pressure vessels, operating engineers, elevating and amusement devices, and fuels. Administration of the safety standards in these areas includes engineering design reviews, inspections, investigations, licensing and registration, training and certification, and public education.

Membership

The management of the affairs of the corporation is supervised by the board of directors, which consists of 13 members unless this number is changed by minister's order. The minister may appoint directors to the board as long as the directors appointed by the minister do not constitute a majority of the board. The minister appoints the chair and the vice-chair of the board from among the directors. Directors other than those appointed by the minister are elected by the members of the board.

Term

Directors appointed by the minister are appointed at pleasure. It is within the minister's discretion to determine the length and number of terms of an appointed director.

Meetings

The board meets four times a year and holds special meetings as required.The board of directors may appoint a day or days in any month or months for regular meetings of the board of directors.Additional meetings of the board may be held at any time provided that forty-eight (48) hours written notice of such meeting is provided to each director.

Remuneration

Appointees are paid by the Board.
