Function

The board collects fees, administers a compensation fund and approves claims made against the fund. The fund was set up under the Ontario Beef Cattle Financial Protection Program to protect producers and other sellers of beef cattle in the event of defaults on payment by licensed buyers.

Membership

Members of the board are appointed by the Minister. The board is composed of at least three and not more than nine members consisting of one member representing each of the following groups: a) the Beef Farmers of Ontario; b) the Dairy Farmers of Ontario; c) the Veal Farmers of Ontario; d) the Ontario Independent Meat Processors Association; e) the Ontario Cattle Feeders’ Association; f) the Ontario Livestock Auction Markets Association; and g) the Ontario Livestock Dealers Association. The Minister appoints one of the board members as chair and one or more board members as vice-chairs of the board of directors.

Qualifications

Candidates should have industry experience and be active in the livestock and beef cattle industry in Ontario.  Experience in financial, accounting or related financial management, board governance, risk management, and an understanding of the context in which the board operates and the interests of stakeholders, are considered assets.

Term

Board members are appointed for a term of up to 3 years and are eligible for reappointment.

Meetings

The Board meets two or three times a year, depending on the number of claims.

Remuneration

Appointees are remunerated according to Schedule A, Level 2 of the Agencies and Appointments Directive.
