Function

The Line Fence Referee and Deputy Referees are responsible for hearing appeals under the Line Fences Act and determining the outcome of appeals of line fence decisions made by municipal fence viewers. 

Membership

1 Line Fence Referee and 2 Deputy Line Fence Referees to conduct occasional line fence appeals hearings throughout the province. 

Qualifications

•  Experience applying legislation and/or use evidence to make impartial decisions
•  Experience dealing with parties in conflict and elicit relevant information – communication skills, mediation/negotiation training or experience
•  Experience with examinations under oath, awarding costs

Term

These positions are 3-year appointments with a possibility for renewal.

Meetings
Referees and Deputy Referees must be able to travel across the province, as many of the appeals are in rural and/or remote areas.
Remuneration

The Referee is currently paid at a rate of $491 per diem + travel expenses for hearings. Deputy Referees are currently paid at a rate of $398 per diem + travel expenses for hearings
