Function

The Board collects fees, administers compensation funds and approves claims made against the Funds. The Funds were set up under the Grain Financial Protection Program to protect producers of grain corn, soybeans, wheat and canola in the event of defaults on payment by licensed buyers.

Membership

Members of the board are appointed by the Minister. The board is composed of at least three and not more than nine members consisting of one member representing each of the following groups: a) the Grain Farmers of Ontario; b) the Ontario Canola Growers' Association; and c) the Ontario Agri Business Association. The Minister appoints one of the board members as chair and one or more board members as vice-chairs of the board of directors.

Qualifications

Candidates should have expert knowledge of the grain industry in Ontario, including working knowledge of grain trading in Ontario/North America. Experience in financial, accounting or related financial management, board governance, risk management and an understanding of the context in which the board operates and the interests of stakeholders, are considered assets.

Term

Members are appointed for a term of up to 3 years and are eligible for reappointment.

Meetings

The board meets two or three times a year, depending on the number of claims.

Remuneration

Appointees are remunerated according to Schedule A, Level 2 of the Agencies and Appointments Directive.
