Function

The boards govern the municipal police forces and in the case of O.P.P. contract locations, serve as advisory bodies.

Membership

 The combined populations of the Municipalities of Bayham, Central Elgin, Dutton/Dunwich, West Elgin and the Townships of Malahide and Southwold exceeded 25,000 according to the last enumeration. The municipalities have entered into a contract with the Ontario Provincial Police to provide policing services. The composition of the joint board is five. Board members include two persons who are members of the councils of any participating municipalities, appointed by agreement of the councils of the participating municipalities; one person appointed by agreement of the councils of the participating municipalities, who is neither a member of a council of a participating municipality nor an employee of a participating municipality; and two persons appointed by the Lieutenant Governor in Council. Boards elect a chair and may elect a vice-chair. If an appointee of the Lieutenant Governor in Council is unable to serve, the Solicitor General may appoint a replacement to serve until the Lieutenant Governor in Council selects a new appointee.

Qualifications

Appointees to Police Services Boards should be active members of their community with a general knowledge of Police Services Boards duties and responsibilities and awareness of community safety issues and programs within their local community. Members appointed by the Province of Ontario must be residents of Ontario and cannot be a judge, justice of the peace, a current police officer or a person who practises criminal law as a defence counsel.

Term

There is no limitation in legislation.

Meetings
Boards meet a minimum of four times per year, as required by the Police Services Act.
Remuneration

Appointees to the Police Services Board are remunerated by the Municipal Council.
