Background

Function

IPON's objects are to: 
-    increase access to intellectual property services; 
-    support the development and protection of intellectual property to improve the commercialization of Ontario research; 
-    advance knowledge of intellectual property and make educational materials available regarding it; 
-    establish partnerships with postsecondary institutions, governments and organizations, including those supporting businesses and entrepreneurs, to build Ontario’s capacity to develop, protect and commercialize intellectual property; and
-    support and advise the Ontario government on developing, protecting and commercialising intellectual property.

Membership

-Appointments are made by the Lieutenant Governor in Council on the recommendation of the Minister

-Up to 9 members including a Chair and Vice-Chair

 

Qualifications

Board Members should have expertise in one or more of the following areas:
-Experience with respect to IP generation, commercialization, and protection.
-Experienced in business development and IP commercialization in SMEs and/or PSEs. 
-Possesses a demonstrated understanding of IP domestic issues (licensing, patenting, acquisition), IP international issues/trends and knowledge of post secondary education, research and innovation sectors.  
-Demonstrated experience in public economic and innovation policy relating to IP issues and excellent stakeholder management skills, including the ability to forge strong relationships with key stakeholders. 

Term

Members will be appointed for terms of up to one year, and may be re-appointed for additional terms, for up to six years in total.

Remuneration

Initial term 
Chair: $500 per diem, plus $15,000 retainer, up to a yearly maximum of $85,000
Vice Chair: $400 per diem, plus $10,000 retainer, up to a yearly maximum of $66,000 
Members: $300 per diem, plus $5,000 retainer, up to a yearly maximum of $47,000
