Background

The Health and Supportive Care Providers Oversight Authority is being established under the Health and Supportive Care Providers Oversight Authority Act, 2021. (opens a new window)

Function

The Health and Supportive Care Providers Oversight Authority (the Authority) has a mandate to register and provide oversight of personal support workers and other potential classes of registrants that may be prescribed by government in future regulations to be made under the new Health and Supportive Care Providers Oversight Authority Act, 2021. This new legislation  implements a new regulatory approach for the oversight of individuals providing health and supportive care services, beginning with Personal Support Workers (PSWs) in Ontario. This novel regulatory approach would be separate and distinct from the existing self-regulatory college model of the Regulated Health Professions Act, 1991 (RHPA). This new Authority will be established in a manner similar to other delegated administrative authorities (‘DAAs’) in Ontario, such as the Retirement Homes Regulatory Authority and numerous other consumer protection DAAs.  

Membership

The Authority shall have a board consisting of eight to twelve directors; the LGIC may appoint a minority of directors. All director positions, not appointed by the LGIC, would be filled by election by the members of the board. The Minister shall designate a chair from among the members of the board of directors.

Term

To be set in regulation.

Meetings

The board of directors of the Authority shall meet regularly throughout the year and at a minimum hold at least four meetings in each calendar year.

Remuneration

The remuneration and expenses of the directors on the board shall be determined by the board and funded by the Authority.
