Function

The commission evaluates applications for innovative materials, systems or building designs for construction of a building, which are not mentioned in the Building Code or which are proposed as equivalent to the requirements of the Building Code. The commission may authorize the use of an innovative material, system or building design subject to terms and conditions. The Building Materials Evaluation Commission is not a testing organization, but may require testing to be done in the course of evaluating an application.

Membership

The Lieutenant Governor in Council determines the number of appointees and may designate one of the members as chair and one as vice-chair.
 

Qualifications

Appointees are required to have the following abilities, skills and knowledge in order to carry out their responsibilities effectively:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of the Building Code Act and the Building Code, an understanding of the provincial building regulatory system, or the ability to acquire such knowledge.
  • Technical expertise in one or more of the following areas: structural design/engineering, architectural design, building sciences and standards, mechanical design/plumbing, on-site sewage systems and fire safety.
  • Relevant experience and expertise in one or more of the following building design and standards, engineering, architecture, building materials manufacturing, testing and industry standards.
  • Familiarity with the rules of practice and supporting procedures of the Commission considered an asset.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Term

There is no limitation in legislation.

Meetings
The commission generally meets once a month, at which time applications are evaluated. Members are also appointed to subcommittees or standing committees. Meetings are usually held in Toronto, although they are also conducted in other centres. Some travel time and one to two days of preparation are required.

Appointees are remunerated according to Schedule B of the Agencies and Appointments Directive
