Background

Toronto Metropolitan University Act, 1977

Function

The university and its board promote the advancement of learning, the intellectual, social, moral, cultural, spiritual and physical development of the university's students and employees, and the betterment of society. They also promote the advancement of applied knowledge and research in response to existing and emerging societal needs and in support of the cultural, economic, social and technological development of Ontario. Another objective is the provision of programs of study that provide a balance between theory and application and that prepare students for careers in professional and quasi-professional fields.

Membership

The president and the Chancellor are ex officio members. Nine members who are neither students nor board employees are appointed by the Lieutenant Governor in Council. Three members who are not university employees are elected from among and by the alumni. Three members are elected from among and by the teaching faculty. Two members are elected from among and by the administrative staff. Three members are elected from among and by the students. Lastly, two members who are neither students nor university employees are appointed by the board.

Term

Members appointed by the Lieutenant Governor in Council serve for a term of three years. Members are eligible for reappointment. No member shall serve for more than three consecutive terms. A member becomes eligible again for appointment one year after the expiry date of the third consecutive term. The limit of three consecutive terms does not include service of an unexpired term.

Meetings

The board meets on the last Monday of every month.

Remuneration

Appointees do not receive remuneration.
