Background

Courts of Justice Act (opens a new window)

Function

The functions of the Judicial Appointments Advisory Committee are to (a) recommend candidates to the Attorney General for the appointment of provincial judges; and (b) provide advice to the Attorney General respecting the process for appointing provincial judges in accordance with the Courts of Justice Act.

Membership

The committee is composed of, (a) two provincial judges, appointed by the Chief Justice of the Ontario Court of Justice; (b) three lawyers appointed by the Attorney General, one appointed from a list of three names submitted by the Law Society of Ontario, one appointed from a list of three names submitted by the Ontario Bar Association and one appointed from a list of three names submitted by the Federation of Ontario Law Associations; (c) seven persons who are neither judges nor lawyers, appointed by the Attorney General; and (d) a member of the Judicial Council, appointed by it. The Attorney General designates one of the members to chair the committee.

Term

Members serve for three years and are eligible for reappointment. The member designated by the Attorney General to chair the committee holds office for a term of up to three years and may serve for two or more terms.

Meetings

The committee meets approximately 25 times a year.

Remuneration

Appointees to the Judicial Appointments Advisory Committee are remunerated on a per diem basis as follows: Chair: $566; Member: $355.
