Background

Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario Act, 2019 (opens a new window)

Function

The Alcohol and Gaming Commission (AGCO) is responsible for regulating the alcohol, gaming, horse racing and cannabis retail sectors in accordance with the principles of honesty and integrity, and in the public interest. The AGCO administers the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario Act, 2019; the Liquor Licence and Control Act, 2019; the Gaming Control Act, 1992; the Horse Racing Licence Act, 2015; the Cannabis Licence Act, 2018; and Order in Council 208/2024 which establishes the licensing framework for charitable gaming.

Membership

The Lieutenant Governor in Council appoints all of the members of the Board, of whom there shall be at least five, and designates one of the members as chair, and may designate one or more members as Vice-Chair.

Term

There is no limitation in legislation.

Meetings

The board meets regularly. A majority of the members constitutes a quorum for meetings of the board and may exercise the powers of the board. The chair presides over the meetings of the board. If the chair is absent or otherwise unavailable to act or if the office of chair is vacant, a vice-chair acts as and has all the powers of the chair.
