Background

Function

The Commission is responsible for administering the Niagara Escarpment Plan and a system of development control. Since the approval of the plan in 1985, its implementation and the processing of development permits and providing recommendations on plan amendments have been the Commission's ongoing responsibility.

Membership

The Lieutenant Governor in Council appoints seventeen members to the NEC. Of these 17, nine members must represent the public-at-large. The eight others must be appointed from a list of three employees or members of council submitted by the council of each upper-tier municipality and of each single-tier municipality that is outside an upper-tier municipality whose jurisdiction includes any part of the Niagara Escarpment Planning Area.

Term

There is no limitation in legislation.

Meetings

The Commission meets once a month, except December, at the Georgetown office. There are also policy meetings that generally occur twice annually, once in the spring and once in the fall. At the request of the Minister, may hold meetings at additional locations.

Appointees are remunerated according to Schedule B of the Agencies and Appointments Directive
