Function

The college regulates the profession of Respiratory Therapy in the public interest by ensuring that individuals have access to services provided by competent health professionals, and that individuals are treated with sensitivity and respect in their dealings with health professionals. Members of the college are governed in accordance with the Respiratory Therapy Act, 1991 the Health Professions Procedural Code, the Regulated Health Professions Act, 1991 and the regulations and by-laws of the college. The college develops and maintains standards of practice, entry to practice requirements, standards of professional ethics, and promotes and develops standards for continuing competence among the members. Various committees of the College of Respiratory Therapists function in a quasi-judicial role with respect to the suspension and revocations of certificates of registration to practice in Ontario.

Membership

Between seven and ten members who are elected in accordance with the by-laws by the members of the college. Between five and eight members are appointed by the Lieutenant Governor in Council who are not, members of the college, members of a college as defined in the Regulated Health Professions Act, 1991 or members of a council as defined in the Regulated Health Professions Act, 1991. The council elects annually a president and vice-president from among the members.

Term

There is no limitation in legislation.

Meetings
• Council meets 4 – 6 times per year (1 in-person, the remainder hybrid (in-person/videoconference). • Typically, public members are assigned to 2 statutory committees in accordance with the by-laws. o Executive Committee: 2 public members; 4 meetings per year – all half day via videoconference. 1 – 2 1-hour panel meetings via videoconference. o Registration Committee: At least 2 – 3 public members; 2 meetings per year – hybrid, full day; 20 panels/year – 1 hr in length, t videoconference. o ICRC Committee: 1 meeting per year – hybrid, full day; 50 panels/year (20 per appointee) – 1 hr in length, videoconference Committee must include at least 2 public members of Council; All Panels must include at least 1 public member. o Quality Assurance: 3 meetings per year – hybrid, full day; 6 panels/year – 1 hr in length, videoconference Committee and all Panels must include at least 1 public member of Council. o Patient Relations : At least 1 public member of Council 2 -3 meetings per year – hybrid , full day. Potentially some ½ day working group meetings 2 – 3 times per year - hybrid o Discipline/Fitness-to-Practise: 2 hearings per year – in-person, 1 full day in length. All hearings must include at least 2 public members. o Finance & Audit Committee : 2 public members; 4 – 6 meeting per year – ½ day meetings hybrid.
Remuneration

Appointees are remunerated according to Schedule A, Level 1 of the Agencies and Appointments Directive.
