Function

The college regulates the profession of medical radiation and imaging technology in the public interest by ensuring that individuals have access to services provided by competent health professionals, and that individuals are treated with sensitivity and respect in their dealings with health professionals. Members of the college are governed in accordance with the Medical Radiation and Imaging Technology Act, 2017 (MRIT Act), the Health Professions Procedural Code, the Regulated Health Professions Act, 1991 and the regulations and by-laws of the college. The college develops and maintains standards of practice, entry to practice requirements, standards of professional ethics, and promotes and develops standards for continuing competence among the members in the five specialties of radiography, radiation therapy, nuclear medicine, magnetic resonance and diagnostic medical sonography. Various committees of the College of Medical Radiation and Imaging Technologists of Ontario function in a quasi-judicial role with respect to the suspension and revocations of certificates of registration to practice in Ontario.

Membership

Between six and nine council members are elected by the members of the college in accordance with the by-laws (currently there are six electoral districts). Between five and eight members who are not members of the college, members of a college as defined in the Regulated Health Professions Act, 1991 or members of a council as defined in the Regulated Health Professions Act, 1991 are appointed by the Lieutenant Governor in Council (public appointees). One or two members are selected, in accordance the by-laws, from among the members who are faculty members of an educational institution in Ontario that is authorized to grant diplomas or degrees in medical radiation and imaging technology (currently there is one academic appointment).

Term

 There is no limitation in legislation for public appointees.

Meetings
• Council meets 4 times per year, 2 day meetings: 8 days total. Preparation time is 7-8 hours per meeting • There are 8 committees to which a public member may be appointed. The number of meetings per year varies: o Executive: 4 meetings per year, 1 day meetings, 3-4 hours prep o Registration : 10 meetings per year, 1 day meetings, 3-4 hours prep o Quality Assurance: 8 meetings per year, ½ day meetings, 1-2 hours prep o Inquiries, Complaints & Reports : 10 meetings per year, 1 day meetings, 5-6 hours prep o Discipline : 2 days orientation and training, and days for hearings when there is a referral o Fitness to Practise: 2 days orientation and training, and days for hearings when there is a referral o Patient Relations : The Executive Committee also functions as the Patient Relations Committee o Finance & Audit : 4 times per year, ½ day meetings, 1-2 hours prep • Preparation time for all meetings depends on the agenda items. • Generally, a public appointee is assigned to 2 committees and may expect attending meetings and hearings of about 11 to 25 days per year. • Meetings of Council and Committees may be held in person at the office in Toronto, or may be held by videoconference. Public members should have use of a laptop or computer with webcam and have Wi-Fi at home or their location of meeting. Agenda material is sent to all Council and Committee members electronically to iPads loaned to public members during their appointment to the Council.
Remuneration

Appointees are remunerated according to Schedule A, Level 1 of the Agencies and Appointments Directive.
