Background

Lake Simcoe Protection Act, 2008, S.O. 2008, c. 23, ss. 18(1) (opens a new window)

Function

 The Committee will:

1. Review the environmental conditions of the Lake Simcoe watershed and provide advice to the Minister with respect to (i) the ecological health of the Lake Simcoe watershed, ii) current significant threats and potential significant threats to the ecological health of the Lake Simcoe watershed, (iii) potential strategies to deal with the threats identified under subparagraph ii and (iv) the scientific research that needs to be pursued to support the implementation of the Lake Simcoe Protection Plan.

2. When requested by the Minister, provide advice with respect to (i) the design and implementation of monitoring programs to monitor whether the Lake Simcoe Protection Plan is meeting its objectives, (ii) whether a proposed amendment to the Lake Simcoe Protection Plan is consistent with the precautionary principle and, if not, whether the proposed amendment should be modified to achieve consistency, (iii) proposed amendments to the Lake Simcoe Protection Plan, (iv) proposed regulations under the Act and (v) proposed regulations under subsection 75(1.7) of the Ontario Water Resources Act.

Membership

The Lieutenant Governor in Council appoints the members of the Lake Simcoe Science Committee after considering the recommendations of the Minister.

Term

Members serve not more than three years and are eligible for reappointment. 

Meetings

Approximately four meetings annually (including one joint meeting with the Lake Simcoe Coordinating Committee).

Remuneration

Appointees are remunerated according to Schedule A, Level 2 of the Agencies and Appointments Directive.
