Background

Soldiers’ Aid Commission Act, 2020 (opens a new window)

Function

The Soldiers’ Aid Commission provides financial assistance to Ontario’s Veterans and their eligible family members in financial need. The Commission may provide eligible applicants with up to $3,000 over a 12-month period per household for eligible expenses. Financial assistance through the Commission can supplement support offered by Veterans Affairs Canada. The Commission is funded by the Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services.

Membership

The board of directors of the Commission shall consist of at least three members and no more than 11 members appointed by the Lieutenant Governor in Council.  The majority of the members of the board of directors shall consist of veterans or individuals who are either the parent, spouse, child or sibling of a veteran.

Term

A member of the board of directors may be appointed to hold office for a term of up to three years at the pleasure of the Lieutenant Governor in Council and may be reappointed.

Meetings

The Commission shall meet regularly throughout the year and in any event no less than four times a year.

Remuneration

Appointees are eligible to receive eligible expenses as outlined in Ontario Public Service’s Travel, Meal and Hospitality Directive.
