Function

The Ontario Energy Board (OEB) regulates Ontario's electricity and natural gas sectors to ensure the energy sector is reliable and sustainable, and the public interest is served. This includes setting just and reasonable rates, approving leave to construct applications, and licensing all participants in the electricity sector, as well as natural gas marketers who sell to low volume consumers.

 

Membership

The Ontario Energy Board consists of a Board of Directors, a Chief Executive Officer, and Commissioners, including a Chief Commissioner. Directors on the Board of Directors are appointed by the Lieutenant Governor in Council (LGIC). The Board of Directors appoints the CEO, Chief Commissioner, and Commissioners.

The Board of Directors is composed of at least five and no more than 10 members, including the Chair. 

The Ontario Energy Board Act requires that there will be at least five Commissioners, including the Chief Commissioner.

 

Term

The first term of office of a person who is appointed to the Board of Directors shall not exceed two years. Directors may be reappointed for one or more terms of up to three years each.

Appointment and reappointment of the CEO, Commissioners and Chief Commissioner are at the discretion of the Board of Directors.

 

Meetings

The Board of Directors meets as required, according to OEB’s by-laws.

Remuneration

The OEB is subject to the Agencies and Appointments Directive. Remuneration of the Board of Directors is currently set by LGIC through an Order in Council. Remuneration of the CEO, Chief Commissioner and Commissioners is a decision of the Board of Directors.
