Function

The council is an advisory body which considers all nominations and recommends candidates who have the greatest merit for the honours of The Ontario Medal for Good Citizenship, The Ontario Medal for Police Bravery, The Ontario Medal for Firefighters Bravery, The Ontario Medal for Paramedic Bravery, and The Ontario Medal for Young Volunteers.

Membership

The council is divided into a Citizenship Division and a Bravery Division. The Lieutenant Governor is the Honorary Chair of the advisory council and the Lieutenant Governor in Council appoints a Chair to oversee both divisions. The Citizenship Division is composed of up to ten members appointed by the Lieutenant Governor in Council, one of whom is designated Vice-Chair, and including the Chair. The Bravery Division is composed of up to 11 members appointed by the Lieutenant Governor in Council, one of whom is designated Vice-Chair, and including the Chair. The Fire Marshal of Ontario, the Associate Chair of the Ontario Civilian Police Commission, and the Director of the Emergency Health Regulatory and Accountability Branch, Ministry of Health are ex-officio, non-voting members of the Bravery Division.

Term

Members are appointed for a term not exceeding three years and may be reappointed for subsequent terms, each not exceeding three years, for a total term no greater than ten years.

Meetings
Citizenship Division - Meetings are held twice a year to select recipients of the two medals. Bravery Division – Up to three meetings per year to select recipients of the three medals.
Remuneration

Members are eligible to receive reimbursement for their travel expenses.
