Function

The council reviews and evaluates nominations submitted to the Order of Ontario and makes its recommendations to the Lieutenant Governor in Council (i.e. Lieutenant Governor in Council refers to the Lieutenant Governor acting on and with the advice of the Executive Council or Cabinet), of those who, in its opinion, merit an appointment to the Order of Ontario.

 

Membership

The Lieutenant Governor of Ontario is a member of the Order of Ontario and the Chancellor of the Order of Ontario by virtue of his or her office. Ex-officio members include:

a) The Chief Justice of Ontario, who is the Chair of the Advisory Council
b) The Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario
c) The Secretary of the Cabinet
d) Not more than six persons who are members of the Order of Ontario appointed by the Premier. 

The Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Citizenship and Multiculturalism is Secretary General to the Order of Ontario.

Term

The three ex-officio members (Chief Justice of Ontario, Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario, and Secretary of the Cabinet) serve for the tenure of their designated positions. There is no limitation in the Order in Council for the term of the six persons who are members of the Order of Ontario.

Meetings

One or two meetings are held each year. The Advisory Council deliberates following the review of nominations and makes its recommendations for appointment.

Remuneration

Council Members are not paid/remunerated for their services. They are eligible for reasonable travel and accommodation expenses and are reimbursed in accordance with applicable government directives.
