Background

Function

The board exercises such powers and performs such duties as are conferred or imposed upon it by or under the act, including the power to (1) inquire into and resolve a dispute respecting an agricultural operation, including the determination of what constitutes a normal farm practice; and (2) make the necessary inquiries and orders to ensure compliance with its decisions.

Membership

Not less than five members are appointed by the minister who may designate one of the members as chair and one or more of the remaining members as vice-chair.

Qualifications

Candidates should have farming and/or municipal experience and an understanding of the context within which the NFPPB operates.  Experience in mediation, as well as interpreting and applying legislation, are considered assets.

Term

Members are appointed for an initial term of two years and are eligible for reappointment. The term of appointment is a maximum of 10 years in total.

Meetings

Panels of three Board members adjudicate hearings when requested. The Board meets as necessary to discuss operational and policy issues. The members meet yearly at an Annual General Meeting to retrain, discuss issues and meet obligations under ATAGAA.
