The Government of Ontario offers a challenging opportunity for a proven leader that will be accountable for the overall management, strategic planning, direction and performance of the Ontario Human Rights Commission (OHRC), as well as the maintenance of ongoing relationships with stakeholder groups.
The OHRC is one part of Ontario’s system for human rights, alongside the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario (HRTO) and the Human Rights Legal Support Centre (HRLSC).
The OHRC is guided by the Ontario Human Rights Code (Code) in all of their work. The OHRC plays an important role in preventing discrimination and promoting and advancing human rights in Ontario. Your duties as Chief Commissioner will include, but are not limited to:
- Providing leadership to OHRC, including setting its goals, objectives, processes and strategic directions;
- Ensuring adherence to applicable directives, legislation, accountability and governance documents;
- Carrying out effective public communications and stakeholder relations; and
- Ensuring that public funds are used with integrity and honesty.
- Qualifications
You are an outstanding, dynamic and inclusive leader and communicator who can inspire creative and innovative thinking. To fulfill this provincially significant mandate, you:
- possess an established track record of leadership as a senior executive;
- demonstrate in-depth knowledge and expertise with human rights issues and issues relating to vulnerable populations;
- have expertise relating to public policy and social values, concepts of fairness, justice and public service;
- possess knowledge of relevant legislation, understand the institutional roles and responsibilities of Ontario’s human rights system and appreciate the sector’s emerging issues;
- have demonstrated experience leading/developing people, as well as highly developed decision-making, relationship building and change management skills; and
- have a high level of inter-personal and communications skills with a demonstrated capacity to develop and maintain collaborative working relationships.

The Chief Commissioner is appointed by the Lieutenant Governor on recommendation of the Premier, for an initial two-year term and is subject to renewal for a maximum of 10 years and upon completion of a comprehensive background check. - Time Commitment

The annual remuneration is $203,026 for the initial two years, plus benefits comparable to the benefit entitlements of Ontario Public Service executives. Salary progression for future reappointments follows Schedule B of the Agencies and Appointments Directive. The Chief Commissioner shall be reimbursed for reasonable work-related expenses while engaged in the business of the Ontario Human Rights Commission in accordance with the Travel, Meal and Hospitality Expenses Directive and any other Treasury Board and Management Board of Cabinet directives.
