- Roles and Responsibilities
The SIU is a civilian oversight agency responsible for investigating circumstances involving police that have resulted in a death, serious injury, discharge of a firearm at a person or allegations of sexual assault.
The Director has the sole authority to decide whether or not charges are warranted based on the findings of a complete investigation. The Director’s decisions are reported to the Attorney General. The Director oversees all aspects of the SIU investigations and is responsible for the overall operations and management of the SIU. The Director must be able to function independently with respect to investigative functions, while maintaining overall accountability for the operations of the SIU to the Ministry of the Attorney General.
As Director, you will exercise the SIU’s dual functions of effective investigations and public accountability. You will oversee all aspects of investigations; decide when an investigation is appropriate; make determinations as to whether or not criminal charges should be laid; ensure that complaints are processed efficiently; establish practices and policies for the operation of the SIU; and maintain open and constructive relationships with police and community organizations.
- Qualifications
Note: An official or former official may not be appointed as a SIU Director. An official or former official is defined in the Special Investigations Unit Act as a:
(a) police officer,
(b) special constable employed by the Niagara Parks Commission, and
(c) person who is a peace officer under section 103.0.2 of the Legislative Assembly Act; (“agent”)Leadership
- Experience in leading comparable organizations with justice sector and/or regulatory mandates, and a diverse background in strategic planning, risk management and related functions.
- A strong commitment to diversity and inclusion.
- A reputation for sound judgement and integrity.
- Understanding of agency accountability and governance, and relationship with government.
- Understanding of labour relations and labour management issues.
Technical Knowledge
- In-depth understanding of civilian oversight of police.
- Knowledge and understanding of policing law in Ontario, including the Community Safety and Policing Act, 2019; the Special Investigations Unit Act, 2019; the Criminal Code (Canada) and Ontario’s criminal justice system.
- Experience in overseeing the use of technology to achieve improved service delivery and internal efficiencies.
Relationship Management and Communication
- Practical and meaningful experience in engaging diverse communities and service providers.
- High level of interpersonal skills with a demonstrated capacity to develop and maintain collaborative
- working relationships and problem-solve in team environments.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, especially the ability to author thorough, timely and straightforward decisions
Location of work is 5090 Commerce Boulevard, Mississauga, Ontario.

The annual remuneration commensurate with experience between $203,026 and $232,020 plus benefits comparable to the benefit entitlements of Ontario Public Service executives. The Director shall be reimbursed for reasonable work-related expenses while engaged in the business of the SIU in accordance with the Travel, Meal and Hospitality Expenses Directive and any other Treasury Board and Management Board of Cabinet directives.
