- Roles and Responsibilities
The Government of Ontario seeks two (2) Councillors to fill vacancies on the Council of the Ontario Professional Foresters Association (OPFA).
Established under the authority of the Professional Foresters Act, 2000 the OPFA licenses professional foresters in Ontario and governs its members in accordance with the Act, the associated regulations, and its by-laws to serve and protect the public interest. The Council of the Association is the board of directors of the OPFA and manages and administers its affairs.
Publicly appointed Councillors represent Ontario’s interest in carrying out duties as follows:
- Prepares for and participates in meetings of the Council and the Association: one to two days per month plus time to read reports and prepare for meetings.
- Participates in discussions and decisions relating to registration, complaints, discipline, and finances as referred to the Council by the respective committees and the Registrar.
- Participates in the oversight of OPFA administration under the direction of the President and Executive Committee.
- Participates on Association committees and work groups including statutory and non-statutory committees.
- Participates in training and stays current in the field of regulatory body oversight by engaging in ongoing professional development.
- Participates in scheduled and ad-hoc Council, committee and general meetings of the OPFA and its Members.
- Complies with policies, practices, and by-laws set out by the Association to meet ethical, financial accountability, and administrative requirements.
- Works constructively and contributes to a collegial atmosphere at the Association by sharing knowledge, time, and experience with Council, committees and members.
- Maintains positive, productive, and appropriate relationships with stakeholders and all parties associated with the Association.
- Appointees will be required to follow the provincial ethical framework set out for government public appointees in the Management Board of Cabinet’s Agencies and Appointments Directive (AAD) and undertake any required training as directed by the Public Appointment Secretariat.
- Qualifications
Publicly appointed Councillors are required to have the following abilities, skills and knowledge to carry out their responsibilities effectively:
- Experience in interpreting and applying legislation with the ability to apply the agency's governing act and related law.
- Ability to understand the professional, institutional and community context within which the Association operates.
- Ability to understand the natural resources management policy and cultural environment within which the Association operates.
- Demonstrated analytical, conceptual, problem-solving, decision-making and writing skills.
- Ability to listen and communicate clearly and effectively.
- Ability to formulate reasoned decisions and positions and communicate them orally and in writing in a timely manner.
- Impartiality and sound judgement to fairly assess matters brought to Council by the Executive Director, Registrar and statutory and non-statutory committees of the Association.
- Commitment to ongoing professional development to enhance expertise and competency in the oversight of regulatory bodies in Ontario.
- Commitment to discretion, good governance, accountability, and transparency
- Good organizational skills to manage workload with complex, ongoing policy and administrative issues.
- Awareness and respect for the diverse interests of members and stakeholders.
- Commitment to respect diversity, and to maintain high professional standards.

Quarterly meeting
The Council meets four times per year typically (1 to 2-day meetings) and may hold additional meetings upon request of the Minister. Councillors also sit on committees that hold meetings on regularly scheduled and ad hoc occasions. Committee meetings are held at various locations across the province. Councillors are eligible to receive $200 per diem for Council work; Councillors are reimbursed for eligible expenses in accordance with the Travel, Meal and Hospitality Expenses Directive.
