Roles and Responsibilities

The Ontario Government is seeking a Vice-Chair for the Algonquin Forestry Authority (AFA). As an agency of the Ministry of Natural Resources, the AFA is the Ontario Crown Agency responsible for sustainable forest management and harvesting activities within Algonquin Provincial Park.

Under the Algonquin Forestry Authority Act, R.S.O. 1990, the AFA’s mandate is to harvest timber in Algonquin Provincial Park, produce logs, and sort, sell, supply and deliver logs. The AFA is empowered to advise on, undertake and carry out forestry, land-management and other programs and projects as the Minister of Natural Resources (the Minister) may authorize. All forestry activities are subject to the Crown Forest Sustainability Act, R.S.O. 1994.

The AFA is responsible to the provincial government in delivering these programs while maintaining the highest standards of fiscal responsibility, transparency, accountability, risk management and customer service.

Appointees will be required to follow the provincial ethical framework set out for government public appointees in the Management Board of Cabinet’s Agencies and Appointments Directive (AAD) https://www.ontario.ca/page/agencies-and-appointments-directive and undertake any required training as directed by the Public Appointment Secretariat.
The vice-chair shall act as chair when the Chair is absent, or the office of Chair is vacant.

The Vice-Chair supports the Chair who is accountable for overseeing the overall management, strategic planning, direction and organizational performance of the AFA, including but not limited to providing strategic leadership and direction to the Board of Directors, directing the preparation of the AFA’s business plan, annual report and other reports in keeping with current government requirements.

A motivational, seasoned leader with vision, management strength, proven leadership, professional awareness and a strong customer service track record.

Candidates must have demonstrated effective leadership experience with strong communication and interpersonal skills, sound judgement and a high degree of political acuity combined with significant knowledge and experience in one or more of the following areas:

facilitation, corporate governance or previous board experience, forestry, finance, management, law, business, human resources, information management, natural resource management, awareness of the context in which AFA operates, including familiarity with the forest industry and with the interests of related stakeholders, local communities and the public and/or environmental science.

Applicants who are not selected for the Vice-Chair position may be considered for a member position on the Board of Directors.

The Board of Directors generally meets six times per year and may meet more frequently if requested to do so by the Minister.

The Vice-Chair is eligible to receive $200 per diem for AFA work and eligible expenses are reimbursed consistent with applicable government policies. Expenses incurred by members will be reimbursed as per Ontario’s Travel, Meal and Hospitality Expenses Directive.
