Function:  The college regulates the profession of Pharmacy in the public interest by ensuring that individuals have access to services provided by competent health professionals, and that individuals are treated with sensitivity and respect in their dealings with health professionals. Members of the college are governed in accordance with the Pharmacy Act, 1991, the Health Professions Procedural Code, the Regulated Health Professions Act, 1991 and the regulations and by-laws of the college. The college develops and maintains standards of practice, entry to practice requirements, standards of professional ethics, and promotes and develops standards for continuing competence among the members. Various committees of the College of Pharmacists function in a quasi-judicial role with respect to the suspension and revocations of certificates of registration to practice in Ontario.

Membership:  Between nine and seventeen members who are elected in accordance with the by-laws by the members of the college, at least two and no more than four of whom must hold a certificate of registration as a pharmacy technician. Between nine and sixteen members are appointed by the Lieutenant Governor in Council who are not, members of the college, members of a college as defined in the Regulated Health Professions Act, 1991 or members of a council as defined in the Regulated Health Professions Act, 1991. The dean of each faculty of pharmacy of the universities in Ontario are also members. The council elects annually a president and a vice-president from among the members.

Term:  There is no limitation in legislation.

Meetings:  There are 4 Council meetings per year (2 consecutive days each). Most public appointees are assigned to at least 3 committees. Executive Committee has 10 to 12 meetings per year; Accreditation Committee has 7 to 8 meetings per year; Complaints Committee has 8 meetings per year (2 consecutive days each); Discipline Committee has 24 meetings per year; Fitness to Practise Committee has 2 to 3 meetings per year; Patient Relations Committee has 1 to 2 meetings per year; Quality Assurance Committee has 4 to 5 meetings per year; Registration Committee has 4 meetings per year with additional panel meetings. There are also several standing and special committees. Public appointees may expect to serve 8 to 45 days per year. Council, Executive Committee, and Complaints Committee meetings may require up to 2 days preparation time; most other committees/working groups require a half-day preparation time.
