Function

The boards advise the Ontario Provincial Police detachment commander assigned to the detachment, with respect to O.P.P. services in the catchment area of the board.

Membership

One member appointed by each of the following municipalities and First Nations, who is a member of the council of the municipality or the band council of the First Nation, for a total of nine members: Chatsworth Township, Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation (Cape Croker), Georgian Bluffs Township, Municipality of Grey Highlands, Municipality of Meaford, Municipality of Northern Bruce Peninsula, Ojibway Nation of Saugeen First Nation (New Saugeen), Town of South Bruce Peninsula and Southgate Township.

Four members who are neither members of the council or band council of, nor employees of, any of the above municipalities or First Nations, jointly appointed by all of the above municipalities and First Nations.

Three members appointed by the Minister.

Qualifications

Appointees to O.P.P. Detachment Boards should be active members of their community with a general knowledge of O.P.P. Detachment Boards duties and responsibilities and awareness of community safety issues and programs within their local community. 

Members appointed by the Solicitor General must be residents of Ontario and cannot be a judge, justice of the peace, a member (past or present) of the OPP, a current member of any other police service in Ontario, a former member of any other police service in Ontario unless they have ceased to be a member for at least one year, a special constable or a First Nation Officer, a person who practises criminal law as a defence counsel or as a prosecutor, a director, officer or employee of a prescribed policing provider or any other prescribed persons. 

Term

The term of office for a member of an O.P.P. detachment board appointed by a single municipality or a single First Nation shall be set out by the municipality or First Nation in the member’s appointment, but shall not exceed the term of office of the council of the municipality or band council that appointed the member.

The term of office for a member of an O.P.P. detachment board appointed jointly by several municipalities or First Nations shall be set out by the municipalities or First Nations in each of the instruments appointing the member, but shall not exceed a term of four years.

A member of an O.P.P. detachment board appointed, whether individually or jointly, by a municipality or First Nation shall sit until the earlier of,
•    six months after the expiry of their term of office; or
•    the day the member’s successor is appointed by the municipality or First Nation.

The term of office for a member of an O.P.P. detachment board that is appointed by the Minister shall be set out by the Minister in the member’s appointment.

If the position of a member of an O.P.P. detachment board who is appointed by a municipality or First Nation becomes vacant, the Minister shall notify the council of the municipality or band council.

Meetings
Boards meet a minimum of four times per year, as required by the Community Safety and Policing Act, 2019.
Remuneration

Appointees to the O.P.P. Detachment Boards are remunerated by the municipalities that appoint members to the board.
