Function

The boards govern the municipal police forces and in the case of O.P.P. contract locations, serve as advisory bodies.

Membership

The population of the Township of Tay Valley did not exceed 25,000 according to the last enumeration. The council of the Township of Tay Valley has entered into a contract with the Ontario Provincial Police to provide policing services. The composition of the board is currently determined as three. Board members include the head of the municipal council or, if the head chooses not to be a member of the board, another member of the council appointed by resolution of the council; one person appointed by resolution of the council, who is neither a member of the council nor an employee of the muncipality; and one person appointed by the Lieutenant Governor in Council. Boards elect a chair and may elect a vice-chair. If an appointee of the Lieutenant Governor in Council is unable to serve, the Solicitor General may appoint a replacement to serve until the Lieutenant Governor in Council selects a new appointee.

Qualifications

Les personnes nommées aux Commissions des services policiers doivent être des membres actifs de leur communauté et posséder des connaissances générales des fonctions et des responsabilités des Commissions des services policiers, et être au fait des questions de sécurité communautaire et des programmes en place au sein de leur collectivité. Les membres nommés par la province de l’Ontario doivent être des résidents de l’Ontario et ne peuvent être juges, juges de paix, agents de police en fonction ou exercer le droit pénal en tant qu’avocats de la défense.

There is no limitation in legislation.

Meetings
Boards meet a minimum of four times per year, as required by the Police Services Act.
Remuneration

Appointees to the Police Services Board are remunerated by the Municipal Council.
