Roles and Responsibilities

The Office for Victims of Crime (OVC) is an advisory agency established under the Victims’ Bill of Rights, 1995 (VBR) to provide advice to the Attorney General on:

  • Ways to ensure that the principles set out in the VBR are respected;
  • The development, implementation and maintenance of provincial standards for services for victims of crime;
  • The use of the Victims’ Justice Fund to provide and improve services for victims of crime;
  • Research and education on the treatment of victims of crime and ways to prevent further victimization;
  • Matters of legislation and policy on the treatment of victims of crime and on the prevention of further victimization.

The Chair, Vice-Chair and members of the OVC are appointed because of their awareness of, and expertise in the needs of victims of crime. This may include experiences as a victim, working with and advocating for victims, and researching victims’ issues. The overall makeup of the OVC should respect the diversity of Ontario’s population, which includes individuals from diverse ethnicities, those who speak the official languages of Canada, and reside in various regions across the province.

The successful applicants will be responsible for:

  • Providing advice, from a victim’s lens, to both the Attorney General and the Ministry of the Attorney General about issues relating to victims of crime; and 
  • Engaging in activities necessary to deliver on the statutory mandate of the agency, including leading or participating in stakeholder engagements, maintaining contacts with victims, professionals, academics, service providers etc., conducting research and maintaining awareness of trends in issues relating to victims of crime, and authoring or contributing to documents as needed.
Qualifications

Interested candidates should be able to demonstrate:

  • Have lived experience with victimization or experience working with victims of crime or victims’ issues in a volunteer or professional setting.
  • Superior knowledge, understanding and/or training in relating to victims of crime and related issues in an Ontario context. This can be through an education or professional capacity.
  • Understanding of the Ontario criminal justice system
  • Relationship management and communication skills to lead discussions and prepare reports;
  • Knowledge of the public sector structure including the agency’s role within this structure;
  • Ability and willingness to attend agency meetings and undertake special projects as required.

  • Professional judgment, awareness; and
  • Conflict management.

Members of the OVC must reside in Ontario and be able to provide a clean vulnerable sector police check.

Monthly meeting
This position is a part-time appointment, with time commitments between ½ day to 4 days per month. Attendance at regular monthly meetings will be required. Meetings take place virtually, although an annual in person meeting is arranged once a year in Toronto. Time for meeting preparation and work on special projects will also be required.

The rate of remuneration is on a per diem basis of $250 per day. Appointees shall be reimbursed for reasonable work-related expenses while engaged in the business of the Office for Victims of Crime in accordance with the Travel, Meal and Hospitality Expenses Directive and any other Treasury Board and Management Board of Cabinet directives.
