Function:  The college regulates the profession of Massage Therapy in the public interest by ensuring that individuals have access to services provided by competent health professionals, and that individuals are treated with sensitivity and respect in their dealings with health professionals. Members of the college are governed in accordance with the Massage Act, the Health Professions Procedural Code, the Regulated Health Professions Act, and the regulations and by-laws of the college. The college develops and maintains standards of practice, entry to practice requirements, standards of professional ethics, and promotes and develops standards for continuing competence among the members. Various committees of the College of Massage Therapists function in a quasi-judicial role with respect to the suspension and revocations of certificates of registration to practice in Ontario.

Membership:  Between six and seven members are elected in accordance with the by-laws by the members of the college. Five members are appointed by the Lieutenant Governor in Council who are not members of the college, members of a college as defined in the Regulated Health Professions Act, or members of a council as defined in the Regulated Health Professions Act. The council elects annually a president and a vice-president from among the members.

Term:  There is no limitation in legislation.

Meetings:  The Council meets 4 times per year. Executive Committee meets 8 times per year; Complaints Committee meets 24 times per year; Fitness to Practise Committee meets 1 to 2 times per year; Patient Relations Committee meets 3 times per year; Registration Committee meets 7 to 8 times per year; Quality Assurance Committee meets 6 times per year; Discipline Committee meets 25 times per year (panels may be scheduled over consecutive days). Approximately 3 hours of preparation is required per meeting. Public members may be appointed to 2 or 3 committees and may serve as chair of 1.
