Function: The college regulates the profession of medical laboratory technology in the public interest by ensuring that individuals have access to services provided by competent health professionals, and that individuals are treated with sensitivity and respect in their dealings with health professionals.
Members of the college are governed in accordance with the Medical Laboratory Technology Act, the Health Professions Procedural Code, the Regulated Health Professions Act, and the regulations and by-laws of the college. The college develops and maintains standards of practice, entry to practice requirements, standards of professional ethics, and promotes and develops standards for continuing competence among the members.
Various committees of the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists function in a quasi-judicial role with respect to the suspension and revocations of certificates of registration to practice in Ontario.
Membership: Between seven and eleven members are elected in accordance with the by-laws by the members of the college. Between seven and ten members are appointed by the Lieutenant Governor in Council who are not members of the college, members of a college as defined in the Regulated Health Professions Act, or members of a council as defined in the Regulated Health Professions Act. One member is selected, in accordance with a by-law made under section 12, from among members who are faculty members of an educational institution in Ontario that is authorized to grant diplomas in medical laboratory sciences. The council elects annually a president and a vice-president from among the members.
Term: There is no limitation in legislation.
Meetings: The Council meets 4 times per year (2 consecutive days each). There are 8 committees to which a public member may be appointed; the number of meetings per year varies. Preparation time required depends on agenda items: Council may require 3 to 6 hours; committees may require 2 to 4 hours. Public appointees may expect to serve approximately 15 days per year.
