Function: The association's objectives are to regulate the practice of professional land surveying and govern the profession in accordance with the Surveyors Act, its regulations and bylaws. The association establishes and maintains standards of knowledge, skill and professional ethics among its members, ensuring that the public interest is served and protected. It also promotes public awareness of the role of the associations.
Membership: Members of the association elect six of their members, as provided for by the regulations. The president and vice-president are elected annually by and from among the members of the association. The immediate past president and the Surveyor General sit as members of the council. The Lieutenant Governor in Council appoints two persons who are neither members of the governing body of a self-regulating licensing body under any other act nor licensed under this act and one person, not licensed under this act, who is a barrister and solicitor of at least ten years' standing in Ontario.
Term: Appointees of the Lieutenant Governor in Council are appointed for a term of not more than three years and may be reappointed for one or more terms of not more than three years.
Meetings: There are usually seven meetings per year totalling 17 days. Board members typically spend an additional 3 to 6 days preparing for these meetings. Board meetings are usually held in the association's offices.
Requirements: Lay members should have the ability to recognize infringements on the public interest by policies under discussion at council meetings. No person shall be appointed or elected to the council unless he or she is a Canadian citizen.
