Function:  The commission decides disputes between building officials and applicants for, or holders of building permits, or individuals who have been issued orders concerning the technical requirements of the Building Code.

Membership:  The Lieutenant Governor in Council determines the number of members to be appointed and, may designate one of the members as chair and one or more as vice-chairs.

Term:  There is no limitation in legislation.

Meetings:  Generally, hearings are conducted bi-weekly for a total of 26 hearing days per year - on average, three to four hearings are scheduled per hearing day. The number of hearings depends on the number of applications filed. Hearings are usually held in Toronto, although they are also conducted in other centres. Some travel time and one to two days' preparation are required.

Requirements:  Expertise in all aspects of construction and engineering is required so that commissioners can advise on materials, techniques, and building safety and design. An employee of the Ontario Public Service or an employee of a municipality is not eligible to be a member.
