Function:  The university and its board promote the advancement of learning and the dissemination of knowledge and encourage the intellectual, social, moral and physical development of its members and the betterment of society.

Membership:  The board is composed of five members named by the United Church of Canada, five members named by the University of Sudbury (Roman Catholic Church), five members named by the Anglican Diocese of Algoma, two members-at-large appointed by the board, the president of the university, one student elected by the students, one alumni chosen by the alumni and five members appointed by the Lieutenant Governor in Council.

Term:  Members serve for three years and until a successor is appointed. Members are eligible for reappointment.

Meetings:  The board usually meets every two months except in July and August.
