Function:  The corporation's mandate is to cultivate and advance the cause of the visual arts in Ontario, offer education and other programs on the origin, development, appreciation and techniques of the visual arts for the various audiences in the province, to collect and exhibit art and displays, maintain and operate the gallery and its facilities for this purpose and stimulate public interest in the work of the gallery.

Membership:  The affairs of the corporation are managed and controlled by its board of trustees consisting of twenty-seven trustees as follows: five appointed by the College of Founders of the Art Gallery of Ontario, ten elected by the members of the gallery, two appointed by the council of the City of Toronto, one of whom shall also be a member of the council and ten appointed by the Lieutenant Governor in Council.

Term:  Government appointees hold office for three years and until a successor is appointed. When an unexpired vacancy occurs, a new member is appointed by the Lieutenant Governor in Council to serve for the remainder of the unexpired term. Members are again eligible for appointment one year after the expiry date of their second consecutive term.

Meetings:  There are approximately four meetings a year and one annual general meeting in June. All meetings are held at the Art Gallery of Ontario.
