Function: The Law Society of Upper Canada is the governing body of Ontario's lawyers and is responsible for their education, licensing, supervision and conduct.
Membership: Forty benchers are elected in accordance with the by-laws. The benchers are elected for regions prescribed by the by-laws. The Lieutenant Governor in Council may appoint eight benchers who are not members of the Law Society. The Treasurer is elected by the benchers and is the president and head of the Law Society of Upper Canada.
Term: The tenure of members appointed by the Lieutenant Governor in Council expires immediately before the regular convocation following the first election of benchers that takes place after the effective date of the appointment. Members are eligible for reappointment. A person whose appointment expires shall be deemed to have been reappointed until his or her successor takes office.
Meetings: The society meets monthly except in July, August and December when there are no convocations.
