Function: COSSARO will maintain criteria for assessing and classifying species, subject to the rules for classification, geographic limitation, and best available scientific information; maintain and prioritize a list of species that should be assessed and classified, including species that should be reviewed and, if appropriate, reclassified; assess, review and classify species in accordance with the list; submit reports to the Minister in accordance with the Act; provide advice to the Minister on any matter submitted to COSSARO by the Minister.
Membership: The committee is composed of 11 members appointed by the Lieutenant Governor in Council, who designates one of the members as chair.
Term: Members serve not more than three years and are eligible for reappointment.
Meetings: The quorum of the committee is established as eight.
Requirements: Relevant expertise that is drawn from a scientific discipline such as conservation biology, population dynamics, taxonomy, systematics or genetics; or aboriginal traditional knowledge. Expert knowledge of species in a particular region of Ontario or in a specific taxonomic group, as well as a reasonably broad knowledge of Ontario's flora and fauna. Good knowledge of concepts and techniques related to the assessment and conservation of species at risk. Ability to assimilate and effectively use a large volume of technical material in subject areas other than the individual's area of expertise, and to make objective and impartial decisions on the basis of scientific information.
