Function: The Northern Development Council will advise the Minister and develop and execute work plans, as directed by the Minister on the following priorities: fulfilling the government's commitments related to Northern Ontario, including building economic opportunities, building strong northern communities, working with natural resource sectors to strengthen their future role in Northern Ontario's economy, furthering partnerships with Aboriginal communities, and other related commitments; furthering existing policies and initiatives affecting northerners as well as broader government commitments, such as student success, healthier Ontarians, strong communities, improving the environment, improving energy efficiency and building opportunities for young people; identifying appropriate mechanisms for northerners to provide input to government policies and to identify priorities, challenges and opportunities in Northern Ontario; as directed by the Minister, undertake consultations on behalf of other ministries on policies, issues and initiatives impacting on Northern Ontario.
Membership: The Council is composed of up to twenty members appointed by the Minister, one of whom shall be named Chair by the Minister.
Term: Members serve for up to three years, with the possibility of reappointment, as determined by the Minister.
The remuneration of the members of the Northern Development Council shall be determined by the Minister but shall only include remuneration for travel, accommodation and disbursement expenses necessarily incurred with their responsibilities as members of the Council.
Meetings: The Northern Development Council will meet up to eight times a year.
Requirements: Membership will reflect a broad range of communities, sectors and organizations within their respective areas. Members must reside in the geographic area they represent.
