Function: The Custody Review Board is a tribunal with authority under the Child and Family Services Act and Part V of the Ministry of Correctional Services Act to review the placement of young persons who are being held in detention or custody upon receipt of an application, and make recommendations to the Provincial Director regarding the placement of the youth. The Board may also review decisions denying a young person's temporary absence from a place of custody and make recommendations to the Provincial Director.
Membership: The Lieutenant Governor in Council appoints the number of members prescribed by regulation, currently not more than thirty-four, and may appoint a member as chair and one or more other members as vice-chairs. All members are cross-appointed to the Child and Family Services Review Board.
Term: Members are appointed for two, three or five years.
Meetings: Hearings take place across the province and are conducted by one member. The chair leads regular meetings of the Board; training sessions for members are held periodically.
Requirements: Prospective members should have a degree, diploma or certificate granted by a university or other post-secondary institution authorized to grant such credentials in Ontario or equivalent qualifications, as determined by the chair, and at least one year experience working in or volunteering in children's services or social services; or at least five years experience working in or volunteering in children's services or social services.

Members are responsible for preparing for and conducting pre-hearings and hearings, making decisions and preparing written reasons for decisions within tight timelines. The chair assigns members to hearings. Availability and capacity to travel are essential requirements.
