Function: In accordance with the act, regulations and by-laws, the board regulates the practices of funeral directors and persons who operate funeral establishments and transfer services so that the public interest may be served and protected. The board establishes, maintains and develops standards of qualification and professional ethics, knowledge and skill for funeral directors and persons who operate funeral establishments and transfer services. It administers a compensation fund and oversees and inspects trust accounts that funeral establishments and transfer services are required by law to establish or maintain. The board mediates complaints between consumers and licensees. It establishes and develops standards for funeral establishments and performs other duties imposed on it by the act.
Membership: The following members are appointed by the Lieutenant Governor in Council: 1) a prescribed number of funeral directors (eight) of whom one is neither licensed to operate a funeral establishment, nor is a director of a corporation that is licensed to operate a funeral establishment, nor directs the operation of a funeral establishment; and 2) a prescribed number of persons (five) who are not funeral directors. The board appoints a chair and a vice-chair and other officers as necessary from among its members.
Term: A member's term shall not exceed three years. A member may be reappointed for further successive terms, but shall not be appointed or reappointed for more than six successive years. When a vacancy due to death, resignation, removal or incapacity to act occurs, a new member may be appointed by the Lieutenant Governor in Council to serve for the remainder of the unexpired term.
Meetings: The board (full board and subcommittees) meets two to three times per month.
Remuneration is paid by the board. The board is then reimbursed by the Ministry for five members who are non-funeral directors. The remuneration for a member who is designated as Chair is $150 per diem.
