Function: The council was established under federal legislation and promotes the fundamental right of Canadians to a healthy and safe working environment.
Membership: The tripartite council, representing government, employers and labour, is composed of the chair and thirty-nine members. The Lieutenant Governor in Council appoints one representative of the Government of Ontario.
Term: Members of the council, known as governors, are appointed to hold office during pleasure for terms not exceeding four years. Members usually serve for three years. A person who has served two consecutive terms as a member is not, during the twelve months following the completion of the second term, eligible to be re-appointed to the council, except as chair.
Meetings: The council meets three times a year.
Requirements: Council members represent government, employers, and labour.
