Function:  All municipalities are required by the Homes for the Aged and Rest Homes Act to establish and maintain a home for the aged or participate with other municipalities in the operation of a joint home. The Act also requires municipalities to establish committees of management and bands or territorial districts to establish boards of management to govern and oversee the operation of the home or joint home. The boards act as management committees for homes for the aged and rest homes. They operate only in districts in Northern Ontario.

Membership:  The board of management for the District of Algoma consists of six members. The Lieutenant Governor in Council appoints two members at large. The board appoints one of the members as chair.

Term:  A term of office shall not exceed three years. When the office of a member becomes vacant before the end of the term of office of the member, a new member may be appointed for the remainder of the unexpired term.

Meetings:  There is an average of three meetings a month and some subcommittee work.

Requirements:  Members must be residents of the district where the rest home or home for the aged is located.
