Function: The Committee advises the Minister of Labour on grievance arbitration matters and about individuals qualified to act as grievance arbitrators under the Labour Relations Act, 1995.
Membership: The Minister of Labour appoints the members of the Committee. The Committee is composed of a chair and six members, three of whom represent employers and three of whom represent trade unions.
Term: Appointments to the Committee usually are for a three-year period.
Meetings: The Committee meets in full session approximately four times a year. There are also sub-committee meetings several times a year (as required) for the purpose of interviewing prospective arbitrators.
Requirements: Committee members should have in-depth experience with the grievance arbitration process and be senior officials in trade unions or employer organizations that are extensive users of the grievance arbitration process. In addition, the Committee should represent a cross-section of the labour relations community (e.g. private sector/public sector; primary industries/ manufacturing /service sector).
